Dangers On The Internet

Dangers on the Internet

Odds are that if you have a computer that is hooked to the Internet, you have experienced some type of a malicious attack.  From viruses, to spyware, and other types of malicious software, dangers seem to lurk around every corner of the Internet.

1) Virus

Problem:
One of the most dangerous is the "virus".  A virus is a program that spreads itself from computer to computer.  Often there is nothing you have to do to catch a virus.  It is pushed to your computer by another infected computer or an infect device like a floppy, CD, or memory stick.  Often the virus will open some kind of a vulnerability on your computer in preparation for a future hacker attack, and then spread itself on to any other computers that connect to yours.

Solution:
There are several excellent free anti-virus software’s on the market, with AVG and Avast being two of the most popular.  Because a virus attack can happen at any time, a good anti-virus program has to run continually in the background,  This can slow the computer slightly, but compared to the alternative, it is a fair trade-off.

Because a virus scanner runs continually, it is recommended that you NOT run more than one scanner at a time, as they will conflict with each other, it treating the other scanner as a "virus" and trying to shut it down.

2) Spyware

Problem:
Another major type of dangerous software is the "spyware".  The original spywares were programs that, when downloaded to your computer, would "spy" on your activities and then sent that information back to their creator.  They could be used by an ad company to get information on your Internet usage so they could better target online ads to your interest, or to steal information like credit card numbers and password and sent them to their creator.

Several variants on "spyware" are also common.  One is "Ad-ware".  This is a program that causes pop-ups ads to appear (often non-stop) on your computer.  If you have an "always on" connection like cable or DSL, these ads can appear even when you do not have a  browser like Internet Explorer running.

Another is the "browser hi-jacked".  These are programs which take over your web browser, often change your home page, and then alter it so that it takes you the creator's page(s) whenever you click on anything, rather than the pages you want.

Spywares are often hidden within another program download.  For example, you download a free music player, but along with it comes a "spyware" that installs at the same time.  This method of tricking you into installing a spyware is called a "Trojan".  You often can not remove a "Trojan" software without also removing the program it was hidden in.

Solution:
There are several excellent free downloadable anti-spyware programs.  Malware byte’s Anti-Malware is one of the most popular.  Along with Skybot Seek & Destroy and Ad-aware.  Unlike a virus scanner, most anit-spyware programs do not run continually in the background.  You have to remember to manual run them on a regular basis for them to be effective.

Because they do not run all the time, you can also have more than one installed on your computer, an alternate which one you use each time you scan.  Each scanners uses a different "list" of what it considers to be "spyware".  So one scanner may clean something that another scanner passes, and vice versa.

3) Malware

Problem:
Malware refers to any type of unwanted or malicious software, including viruses and spyware.  But it also includes other types of program.  One of the most vicious is the "rogue" program.  This is a program that claims to be something helpful like an anti-virus scanner, but once installed it takes over your computer, disables everything, and refuses to allow you to use your computer until you pay them money to free up the computer.  It is a form of on-line extortion.

Solution:
While most anit-spyware programs are able to clean rogue programs, usually by the time you realize that you are infected, the rogue has already disabled your scanner.  So these can be very difficult to remove.

It usually requires booting the computer into Safe Mode and deleting the files that actually run the rogue program, then run an ant-spyware scanners

There are also paid version of most anti-spyware scanners that do run continually in the background.  These will provide protection against infections, but have to be running before the computer is attacked.

To summarize, to keep your computer safe while on the Internet from malicious software, you need to keep both an anti-virus and an anti-spyware program installed and running on your computer.

Finding affordable web hosting domains can be a big challenge. There are some companies that will literally charge hundreds of dollars per month while others will charge just a few hundred a year. Finding web hosting domains that offer fair prices and reliable service is hard to do. To help you understand which type of web hosting domains you need to be in the market for, here are some easy tips:

1.       What is the nature of the site? Personal use sites don't need an amazing host but a business site will need high quality. After all your customers will learn about your company because of the website and this is also where they go to purchase your products.

2.       What platforms will you publish in? Be sure to choose web hosting domains that cater to the type of platforms you use like WordPress or Joomla.

3.       Customer support is critical in choosing web hosting domains. You need to seek out a company that will be available to help you 24/7. Make sure they can get on your problem immediately in order to keep your website up and running at all times.

4.       How much are you willing to pay and how much can you afford to pay web hosting domains? This is a very important decision to make as there are a lot of companies that will raise the price on you and claim you were under a temporary pricing plan.
